The Science of Pet Nutrition & Energy Requirements

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to extend your pet's lifespan. Overweight pets are at a higher risk of diabetes, joint pain, heart disease, and breathing difficulties. To keep your pet in peak condition, you need to understand their daily calorie needs — scientifically known as Daily Energy Requirement (DER).

Step 1: Calculate Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

RER is the energy required for basic bodily functions while resting. The formula:

RER = 70 × (Body Weight in kg)0.75

Step 2: Adjust for Activity Level (DER)

Multiply RER by a factor based on your pet's lifestyle:

  • Neutered Adult Dog: RER × 1.6
  • Active/Working Dog: RER × 2.0 to 3.0+
  • Neutered Adult Cat: RER × 1.2
  • Kittens: RER × 2.5

The 10% Treat Rule

Treats should never make up more than 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake. The remaining 90% must come from a complete and balanced commercial diet.
